Bandit: Level 16→17

The goal of this level is to retrieve the password for the next level via port 31000-32000 and SSL encryption

To accomplish this we can namp to scan for open ports and determine which services are running on those ports

First we need to log onto the level

• Type the command ssh bandit16@bandit.labs.overthewire.org -p 2220
• Enter the password cluFn7wTiGryunymYOu4RcffSxQluehd

We can scan for open ports and discover the services running on those ports

• Type the command nmap localhost -p 31000-32000 -A

The -p part of the command scans our current machine localhost for any open ports in the range 31000-32000

The -A part of the command determines the services that are running on all of the open ports

The command may take some time to run but once its done we get a list of open ports and their corresponding services

We can now find the port that is running the ssl/echo service

Once its done we can see that the only port that is running both ssl and echo is port 31790

We now know that this is the port we need to submit our password to

We can use the methods we used last level to do this

• Type the command echo "cluFn7wTiGryunymYOu4RcffSxQluehd" | openssl s_client -connect localhost:31790 -ign_eof

The only changes we make are to the password we are submitting and the port we are submitting it to

When the command gets run we can see that unlike last level we are not given a password but a Private RSA Key

• Copy the key
• Type exit to logout

Once you have logged out you need to save the key to a file so we can use it to log onto the next level

• Save the key as bandit17.key
